(from the Washington Star Newspaper)
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
12 cup milk
2 bsp. butter or margarine
1/2 to 1 cup sugar (depending on type of fruit)
1 cup boiling water
1 pint sour cherries and juice (or other fruit)
additional butter or margarine
Mix the 1/2 cup sugar with flour and baking powder and work in the 2 Tbsp. butter until crumbly. Add milk. Spread dough on bottom of a well-greased 8-inch square glass (or not) pan. Mix the cherries (or any other fruit) and juice with 1/2 to 1 cup sugar. Pour boiling water over the fruit and stir until sugar dissolves. Pour fruit mixture over the dough in the glass pan and dot the top with a little butter. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 375F or until golden brown on top. Dough will rise during the baking.
Serves 4 to 7.
