Great Grandmother's Caramel Pudding Cake

½ cup sugar
1 Tbsp. shortening
2 tsp. baking powder
2 eggs
½ cup milk
pinch of salt
1 cup flour
½ cup raisins
nuts (optional)

Mix like muffins. Pour into square pan. Mix 1 cup brown sugar (or ½ for less sweet), cup water. Pour over batter. Bake 20 minutes at 400°.
